Selling Stuff

There are many ways to sell your things, but there is a right way to do things and a wrong way. In this post we will discuss various channels of selling things, the method of delivery involved in getting the item to the person, and the result compensation.
First you must consider what you are selling, is it conventional, or even possible to ship this item to somebodies home/business? If the answer is yes, consider registering for an ebay account if you have not already.
eBay, created in 1995, is a consumer to consumer selling site that is used to sell millions of items, worldwide, daily. Signup is free, and it is free to list any item, however ebay will charge you a minimal fee if your item successfully sells. After your item is sold, you package it and bring it to the post office where you ask for a delivery confirmation number to allow you to see when the item is delivered. Members are ranked by feedback, positive negative or neutral, which are given after every purchase/sale.

For those who prefer person to person sales, or have items for sale that would not be of conventional means to ship, there are also several other options available.

Have you considered an old school garage sale? that's right gather your belongings and place them out on your lawn with tags indicating the price, advertise flyers in nearby business and on telephone poles days before to allow many people to know about your garage sale. Post your garage sale on craigslist.org and garagesalestracker.com for maximum turnout.

Pawn stores are also great places to sell almost anything from household items to electronics to gift cards, but may not be the best source of $ because they are in it to resell the items for a profit... instead why not consider selling your item directly to a customer on craigslist.
Craigslist is a website that people make listings based on the category of the item they are trying to sell. fields include Title, Price, Location, Description, and Photos. you pretty much tell it how it is on craigslist, you can tell people to call your phone number and meet you at your house, or go arrange to go to there house/public spot. Being in control of your sale/purchase is the main important thing to ensure a succesful sale. Never meet in a location that you do not feel safe going to and do not accept any other payment beside cash on craigslist

Retail

There are many retail stores that offer buy back programs for used items that are still in moderately good condition. Usually you are able to sellback an item even if it was purchased at a different store.

Lets begin with For Your Entertainment (FYE), FYE is one of the most popular outlets to sell back an enormous variety of used cds, dvds, and video games. Out of all the retail stores around me, FYE has accepted the most amount of cds/dvds, moreso than blockbuster and walmart.

Walmart and target both offer buy back solutions for both electronics and other various appliances. Although they only offer gift cards as methods of payment, this is often still better than just allowing this unused item to waste space.
You can look up the value of your item using the companies website http://walmart.gazelle.com/ http://sites.target.com/site/en/spot/page.jsp?title=nextworth

For those who are wary about not getting cash, consider selling your gift card for cash! there are many ways to go about doing this including but not limited to: pawn shops, craigslist.org, ebay.com http://www.plasticjungle.com/sell-gift-cards i prefer ebay, because most of the time the final bid for your item will be just slightly above the actual amount of the card, this is because most people who buy gift cards on ebay use programs that give them % cash back on select purchases, which include ebay purchases like these.

Other places that offer trade in programs include Home Depot and Best Buy

Collecting recycling for deposit redemption

I'm sure we've all done this at least once before. Instead of throwing out your cans and bottles, collect them til the end of the week when you go shopping, and put them 1 by 1 into the machines for 5 cents each. This method is similar, but works best based on a larger scale, your local town!

What you will need:
  1. Bicycle (Optional)
  2. Gloves
  3. Plastic Bags (Grocery bags or garbage bags will do, don't worry too much about this as you may find some along your journey)
  4. Energy

You head out with all these items, bicycle is for speed but if you are not comfortable riding on a bike while carrying heavy bags of cans, than you can try this method on foot. Go around your town the night before your town collects recycling, and go through the cans that are designated for recyclables. What you want to look for mostly is 12 oz cans and plastic bottles. I find 24oz cans are too spacious, and glass bottles are too heavy, and in our efforts to maximize profits we chose to stick to the smaller, lighter redeemables.

Most towns collect recycling every other week, often alternating weeks with cardboard pickup, so you may be able to find a nearby town in biking distance that does recycling collection the opposite week from you, so this can be a weekly source of income!
The amount of money you make off of redeeming these is based on a few limitations, one being your town, you may not live in a town that has houses right next door to each other so collection will be limited by your energy. Another limitation is how much you can carry at once/stash until you can bring a car to come pick it up. If you pack it correctly some vehicles can hold up to or over $100 worth of recycling! Please be sure to secure all bags properly as to not leak your nights work all over the streets of your town!

Scrap Metal

One of the first methods of making money off of discarded waste is scrap metal. Metal can be found in almost everything now adays, some of it can be worth a lot of money, others not so much, it is important to know what you are scrapping before you bring it down to the scrap yard because inside your appliance could be precious metals that would be worth a lot more if sold separately.

Lets start by first explaining what kind of materials we will be dealing with and their general worth...
also i should mention these prices vary not only by location, but metal prices also fluctuate with time, with short term and long term rises/falls. Call up your local metal place for a free quote.

Magnetic:
Steel/Iron    .08 - .10 /pound

Non Magnetic:
Aluminum .60/pound
Copper 3.80/pound
Circuit Boards* .15/pound
Car Batteries $10/each

* and other Copper Bearing Material (CBM)

These are the major three metals i come across, there are different variations of these metals, and some sources may be more pure or "clean" than others, and their value will be reflected by its purity.

For example... dirty aluminum can be as low as 15-20 cents/pound which is only 1/4 or 1/3 of the original price, its best to call up the metal shop and ask for a price on the specific unit(s) you're scrapping to make sure you know what you're going to get before you count your chickens before they hatch

First Thread

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. On this page i will explain various methods to make money, primarily by obtaining/recycling/repairing things that society has thrown out or discarded without realizing it's potential monetary value. I will also discuss methods of saving money.
